A New Lens - Beating About The Bush

In January 2023, Penelope Bartlau and Jason Lehane through Barking Spider Creative, had a week-long residency at the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Artists collaborated to create an installation in response to exhibition Beating About The Bush. They explored themes of the lost child, surrealism and degradation of nature, while examining notions of the photographer's gaze and intent across time.

The Beating About The Bush exhibition brought Art Gallery of Ballarat’s collection of Australian Impressionist landscape paintings together with female photographers who re-examined the Australian Impressionists and brought a new lens to the Australian landscape.

Audience feedback

“The nest of a bowerbird that collects body parts”
